What is Certificate Recognition?
This is an administrative process through which a certificate or diploma obtained abroad can be officially recognized in Poland as equivalent to certain levels of education or rights to continue education, such as applying to a university.
What is "Kuratorium" (Board of Education) and Why Does It Matter?
In Poland, the „Kuratorium Oświaty” (Board of Education) is a regional education authority. For students with high school diplomas from outside Poland, this authority sometimes needs to officially recognize („nostrify”) those diplomas so they’re valid for further education in Poland. In Warsaw, this is the „Kuratorium Oświaty w Warszawie” (Board of Education in Warsaw).
Who Must Apply?
You must apply if your certificate was issued by:
- A country outside the EU, OECD, or EFTA, and
- A country that does not have a bilateral agreementwith Poland on mutual recognition of education documents.
This includes most non-Western or non-European countries.
Special note for Belarusian citizens:
From July 1, 2024, new legal changes allow recognition of certificates from Belarus even if not all documents are available. Each case will be reviewed individually.

You are exempt from the recognition process if your certificate is:
- From a country in the EU, OECD, or EFTA(e.g., Germany, USA, UK, Norway, Canada, Japan),
- An IB diploma(International Baccalaureate),
- An EB diploma(European Baccalaureate),
- From a country that has a treaty with Polandon mutual recognition of education.
Where to Apply?
You should apply to the Board of Education (Kuratorium Oświaty) based on:
- Your residential address in Poland, or
- The location of the institution(e.g., school or university) where you plan to use the certificate.
Note: Appointments in Warsaw must be booked online only via the official system.
